Tips from a

Why is my fireplace smoking up my house?

Smoking issues are so frustrating for homeowners, so let’s take a brief look at causes of smoking.  First, when does the fireplace smoke?  Is it at the beginning (means you haven’t preheated the flue system, or the damper isn’t fully open); the middle (typically means you have built a rip roaring fire that overwhelms the ability of the chimney to draft; decrease the amount of wood to the point you can see the top of the flames when you look at the fireplace; OR you are burning wood that has a high moisture content.  Wood that has a high moisture content hisses and pops.  This produces a denser, heavier smoke that is harder to draft).   If smoking occurs at the end of the fire, it is because the flue has cooled down and has lost the updraft ability; glass doors may be needed.

There are other causes of smoking:  HVAC return competing with the draft; breezy or windy conditions that overwhelm the draft; running ceiling fans, dryers, or kitchen range vents that are on the same floor as the fireplace; stack effect for fireplaces located on 2 levels of the house sharing the same chimney chase, plus others.
